Mouthguards - They ARE Important

May 26, 2015 | Posted in Education

Sometimes we take our teeth for granted, imagine what it would be like to suddenly lose your two front teeth. Eating, drinking, and talking would all be affected. If you want to protect your mouth, a mouth guard should be an essential piece of your athletic gear.

There are three different types of mouthguards that are available:

  • Stock - these mouthguards come pre-formed and fitted, are typically inexpensive, and can usually be bought at your local sporting goods store. The downside to stock mouthguards is that they are often a bad fit and can make breathing more difficult.

  • Boil and Bite - these mouthguards are also often sold at sporting goods stores, they’re often a better fit than stock mouth guards. To use them, they should be softened in boiled water, then inserted into the mouth so they can adapt to the shape of the mouth.

  • Custom fitted - these mouthguards are custom made at a dental office. They are designed specifically for your mouth and are the best of the three different types of mouthguards.

Custom fitted mouthguards can also be very important for people who have fixed bridge work or wear braces. Mouthguards can provide a soft barrier between the brackets and your teeth, limiting the risk of injuries.
