In Ontario, over 13,000 deaths are caused by smoking each year. Cigarette, pipe, and cigar smoke damages living tissue wherever it travels, including the mouth, tongue and throat.  Smoking has a serious effect on oral health, and it can often be noticeable to others.

Depending on how long one has smoked for, they can expect to develop any of the following:

  • Discoloured teeth

  • Persistent bad breath (Halitosis)

  • Gum disease (Gingivitis, periodontal disease)

  • Oral cancers

  • Mouth sores

  • Cavities

  • Increase in tartar build up

  • Sinusitis

  • Altered sense of taste and smell
