Toothpaste - What You Should Know

May 12, 2015 | Posted in Education

Does it matter what kind of toothpaste you use? Are all toothpastes equal? How do I choose the right toothpaste?

One of the main reasons we use toothpaste is it acts as an abrasive that helps remove food and plaque from our teeth. However, toothpaste also provides our teeth with active ingredients such as fluoride.

It’s important that your toothpaste contains fluoride. Fluoride has a clear effect on oral health, it makes teeth more resistant to decay. You should also remember not to swallow toothpaste, as it can be toxic if swallowed in large amounts.

Most toothpastes will also contain a detergent. Detergents can be found in many other products such as shampoo, where they act as foaming agents. In toothpaste, a detergent acts the same way. The foaming properties of the detergent help distribute the toothpaste around the mouth.

There is a myriad of dental toothpastes available including those that claim: plaque control, tartar control, whitening, gingivitis controlling, desensitizing , just to name a few. Some of these claims have merit, but you should ask us at the Rideau Dental Center for a toothpaste that suits your needs. There are specialized toothpastes for specific needs, which your hygienist may recommend for you. Call us at 613-230-7475.
