Are You Always Tired?

So do you get a good night sleep and feel rested in the morning?  Or do you keep your partner up with your snoring?  You may have a sleeping disorder that could cause you to stop breathing many times throughout the night.  This disrupts your natural sleep cycles and causes a restless sleep.  This disorder is called obstructive sleep apnea.
Major signs of sleep apnea include sleepiness throughout the day when not active, morning headaches, difficulty with concentration and memory, moodiness, irritability and depression.  Has your partner ever told you snore then go quiet then go back to snoring again? Going quiet is when you briefly stop breathing.
Major risk factors include:

  • Overweight

  • Male

  • Related to someone who has sleep apnea

  • Over the age of 65

  • Black, Hispanic, or a Pacific Islander

  • A smoker

  • Certain physical attributes, such as having a thick neck, deviated septum, receding chin, or enlarged tonsils or adenoids

Dentists cannot diagnose sleep apnea but they can help recognize the signs and symptoms to refer you to your family physician.  Dentists can also work with your physician to fabricate oral appliances to help prevent your jaw and tongue from blocking your airway.  Please feel free to discuss any concerns when you visit us at the Rideau Dental Centre.  Call us at 613-230-7475.
