Sleep Apnea - What is it?

November 06, 2017 | Posted in Education

Sleep apnea is a common sleeping disorder that causes breathing to repeatedly stop and start during sleep. Typical symptoms of sleep apnea are loud snoring and feeling tired after a full night of rest. There are three main types of sleep apnea:

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea - This is sleep apnea’s most common form. Breaks in breathing are caused by the throat muscles relaxing when they shouldn’t.

  • Central Sleep Apnea - Occurs when the brain sends incorrect signals to the muscles that control breathing.

  • Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome - This form occurs when someone has a combination of both obstructive and central sleep apnea.

If it goes unnoticed, sleep apnea can cause major health issues such as strokes, hypertension, heart attacks, and even heart failure. Sleep apnea is a very serious problem, but your dentist at the Rideau Dental Centre is trained to help in the treatment.
